The research organizations in Dimensions are defined using GRID (grid.ac). The criteria for inclusion in GRID is that an institution is associated with research. This is commonly defined by whether grants or publications are connected to these institutions. GRID does not include departments as separate entities. In the case of medical centres, these are subject to review, since they can have functions beyond academic research and fall within the scope of healthcare. In order to determine if an institution is part of a bigger organisation or if it is considered as independent, we assess how notable it is. In the case of US institutions we refer to the database of accredited post secondary institutions (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/). This allows us to discern if an institution grants its own degrees. Another criteria used to define if an institution is independent, is by reviewing supplemental online resources such as Wikipedia and its official URL.
